Federal employment laws may prohibit covered employers from discriminating against an employee or applicant because of protected characteristics such as:
- Race
- Color
- Religion
- Sex, including pregnancy and related conditions
- Sexual orientation
- Gender identity
- National origin
- Disability
- Age, for workers age 40 or older
- Genetic information
These protections may apply to hiring, firing, pay, assignments, promotions, harassment, and other employment decisions. State and local laws may protect additional characteristics or apply to smaller employers.

Immigration Status and Threats
A hirer should never use threats, intimidation, immigration status, or the fear of government authorities to avoid paying a worker or to force someone to remain in a dangerous or abusive situation.
Never give a hirer your passport, immigration documents, original identification, banking password, ChambaNOW password, or access to your personal accounts.
California's Labor Commissioner states that California labor protections apply to every worker in the state regardless of immigration status.
